In part one we discussed the reasons to learn a foreign language as a Christian. Now we will dive into the process of how to learn a language by yourself. Whether you are someone with a small friend group or just new to this we are here to help you learn solo!

1.  How to Learn a Language by Yourself: Switch Your Phone to the Foreign Language

Switch your phone to the language you are learning. Switching the language forces you to utilize that language on a daily basis. It may be tricky at first, but you will naturally adapt to it. Depending on your level if it is a bit difficult you can change the language on certain apps rather than changing everything.

2. How to Learn a Language by Yourself: Favorite Shows, Music, Podcasts, & Movies in the Foreign Language

Shows are one of the most valuable resources you could utilize. Listening to the language through your favorite shows, movies, or podcasts is truly incredible! Try rewatching a series you loved as a child or movies dubbed in that language. Explore shows that are originally in that language.

For instance, when I was learning Spanish I would listen to UnShackled radio shows, Mujer Casos de la Vida, or kids shows, such as Charlie and Lola, Shrek, Spongebob, H2o Just Add Water, etc. I noticed I would remember the words and exact phrases more quickly from the pure joy of watching these films! Yes, it may sound silly but trust me it will make you enjoy the process even more!

3. How to Learn a Language by Yourself: Use the Foreign Language in Your Hobbies (Singing, Playing an Instrument, etc.)

Try utilizing the language you are learning in your hobbies. For instance, if you love singing, start singing in that language. Take a dance class or cooking class in that language. There are so many ways to implement a language into your hobbies.

4. How to Learn a Language by Yourself: Speak to Yourself

Speaking is the most vital component of learning a language. When learning a language I noticed when I forced myself to speak that’s when everything improved. It was like the language started to click! I could understand movies without subtitles, understand conversations better, read better, and of course, speak!

Having friends who speak the language is useful, but if you don’t have anyone to talk to, speak to yourself. It is not the most effective, but you are practicing. You can utilize translator apps, such as Deepl to assist you with your correction.

5. How to Learn a Language by Yourself: Use Siri To Talk

In addition, you can even utilize Siri to speak and gain feedback. All you have to do is switch your Siri language to a foreign language and ask her questions. I would say what I wanted to say in that language and ask her what it meant in English to see if I was correct. For instance,

“Oye Siri, como se dice, “hoy voy a comprar una almohada”en inglés."

6. How to Learn a Language by Yourself: Don’t Be Afraid to Speak

Do not be afraid of making mistakes. You will not learn a language if you don’t get out of your comfort zone. Don’t let the opinion of others hinder you from practicing and utilizing the language daily. Most people do not care and want to help. I recommend surrounding yourself with others who are learning your language as you both will be more patient and helpful towards each other.
