Do you feel like your prayer life has been a bit dry? Have you been inconsistent with praying? Or when you are praying you start to drift off to sleep or ramble. All of these things are signs of a weak prayer life. We all could improve our prayer life, and a great place to start is to utilize a prayer journal. A prayer journal is a beautiful tool to guide you to pray more with intention.

Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.

Philippians 4:6, KJV

What is a Prayer Journal?

A prayer journal is as simple as it sounds. It is a journal where you write down your prayers. Everything you bring to God in conversation you can write down. It’s a beautiful tool that can truly enhance your prayer life for several reasons.

Benefits of Using a Prayer Journal

1. Intention & Focus

Using a prayer journal allows you to truly focus on each prayer. You may wonder how. Think about a time you prayed just out loud or in your head. Did you truly focus on each prayer and could recount everything you talked about with God? Usually, people can focus more when they are physically writing down the names of people, prayers, gratitude, and other things in their journals. In addition, it allows you to be more intentional as it takes more time and thought to write rather than just speaking.

2. Keep Track of Your Prayers & Check Off Answered Prayers

A prayer journal is excellent as it keeps a record of everything. The amazing thing is you can cross off the prayers that have been answered and review what God has done in your life. This is an example of a prayer journal that has specific pages to keep track of those prayers. Most importantly you can review these prayers and are reminded of God's faithfulness. Give Him thanks for everything and each answered prayer.

3. Creates a Routine

Having a prayer journal organizes you. If you feel like you are a bit all over the place a prayer journal can help with that. You can get creative with this and make a whole system for your journal. Here are a few common methods of prayer journaling.

  • By the Day Journaling: Use each day of the week for a specific prayer. Ex: Monday, pray for your family, Tuesday pray for the salvation of the lost, etc.

  • Sectioned Journaling: Having sections within your journal. Example: Things I’m grateful for, Prayers for Family, Prayers for Friends, Prayers for Spiritual strength, Prayers of Repentance, etc.

  • Random Journaling: This is my style of journaling. I go with the flow and pour my heart out on the pages. Yes, I utilize some structure as I always include repentance, gratitude, and praying for the lost, but it’s not a structured way to journal.

Not only does it provide organization, but provides a routine. I find myself looking forward to my prayer time in my journal and it has become a daily routine. A routine further strengthens your faith, and relationship with God, and strengthens your prayer life.

4. Keeps Prayer Engaging

It can be so exciting writing down all your prayers. I'm not sure about the psychology behind it but mainly people find it to be relaxing, encouraging, joyful, and overall engaging.

Even if you are not a fan of writing, you should try it at least once and see what you think. It can't hurt, right? : )

Pick Up Your Pen & Paper

Prayer can easily be grown and developed through small changes in your life. As discussed, tools, such as prayer journaling creates engagement, routine, consistency, and a record of God's faithfulness. All of these things draw you closer to God in prayer. If you thought about prayer journaling, give it a try and see how this simple tool can transform your prayer life.
