If you are a Christian, you’ve probably heard of the infamous “Proverbs 31 Woman”. The Proverbs 31 Woman is often sought after by both men and women of God. Women of God strive to become a Proverbs 31 woman while Men of God strive to find a wife that fits a Proverbs 31 woman. She is desirable, but if we were to find this type of woman could we truly identify her? Do we have what it takes to become this woman of God? Becoming this starts with knowledge. The understanding of who she is through her characteristics. Once you have an understanding of who she is that’s where the work starts to become such a beautiful woman of God.

The Proverbs 31 Woman: Proverbs 31:10-31

10 Who can find a virtuous woman? for her price is far above rubies.11 The heart of her husband doth safely trust in her, so that he shall have no need of spoil.12 She will do him good and not evil all the days of her life.13 She seeketh wool, and flax, and worketh willingly with her hands.14 She is like the merchants' ships; she bringeth her food from afar.15 She riseth also while it is yet night, and giveth meat to her household, and a portion to her maidens.16 She considereth a field, and buyeth it: with the fruit of her hands she planteth a vineyard. 17 She girdeth her loins with strength, and strengtheneth her arms.18 She perceiveth that her merchandise is good: her candle goeth not out by night.19 She layeth her hands to the spindle, and her hands hold the distaff. 20 She stretcheth out her hand to the poor; yea, she reacheth forth her hands to the needy. 21 She is not afraid of the snow for her household: for all her household are clothed with scarlet. 22 She maketh herself coverings of tapestry; her clothing is silk and purple. 23 Her husband is known in the gates, when he sitteth among the elders of the land. 24 She maketh fine linen, and selleth it; and delivereth girdles unto the merchant. 25 Strength and honour are her clothing; and she shall rejoice in time to come. 26 She openeth her mouth with wisdom; and in her tongue is the law of kindness. 27 She looketh well to the ways of her household, and eateth not the bread of idleness. 28 Her children arise up, and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praiseth her. 29 Many daughters have done virtuously, but thou excellest them all. 30 Favour is deceitful, and beauty is vain: but a woman that feareth the Lord, she shall be praised. 31 Give her of the fruit of her hands; and let her own works praise her in the gates.

Behaviors & Characteristics of a Proverbs 31 Woman

She Puts God First

Her spiritual life is summarized in Proverbs 31:30. She has a reverent fear of the Lord that leads to her constant acknowledgment of the Lord in her steps (Proverbs 3:6). This way of living produces wisdom that is seen throughout the entire poem (Proverbs 9:10).

Provides for her Home

She is attentive to the needs of her household. Examples of her attentiveness: making clothing for her family to keep them warm (Proverbs 31:21), securing the best food for her family (31:14, 15), etc. In addition, she is supportive, loyal, and contributes greatly to her husband…the fruits of that are seen (31:11-12, 23). Resourceful

She is exceptionally resourceful with what God has given and entrusted her with (31:16, 24). This type of resourcefulness and entrepreneurial spirit is similar to the story in Matthew 25:14-29. Similar to the servant with 5,000 coins, she is faithful to what is given and multiplies it. Specifically, she finds ways to make money through her craft while supplying sashes to the merchants. In addition, she invested and reinvested as seen with the field (31:16).

Proactive

She is proactive through preparation and her routine (31:15, 21).

Hard Working

If it isn’t already apparent this woman works hard! She rises before dawn to begin working. She does this willingly and gladly (31:15). She is constantly working with her hands to create materials to fulfill the needs of others and bring in more money for her household (31:19, 20-24). She does not eat the bread of idleness (laziness).

Wisdom & Kindness

She is full of wisdom and kindness which is seen not only through her actions but her words (31:26).

Strong

Her character is strong and honorable representing a woman who fears the Lord (31:25, 30).

Thoughtful/Considers Others

She considers the needs of others from her family to the poor (31:20, 15, 24).

How to Implement These Qualities into Your Life

First, it’s important to recognize that becoming a Proverbs 31 woman is a process. We are not born as this woman, but rather pruned and formed into this strong woman of God. Fortunately, through trials and experiences God molds us through the sanctification process (2 Thessalonians 2:13) which produces fruit displayed in Proverbs. In addition, just because you are not a wife or have a family you can still implement these qualities and utilize them. To ensure you are doing all you can to grow in Christ here are some things to keep in mind.

Prayer: Always pray without ceasing. Praying to God to become a Proverbs 31 woman is a great first step. He provides wisdom to us if we ask so don’t be shy (James 1:5). A prayer journal is especially useful to keep track of your prayers and the progress of answered prayers :).

Obedience: Being obedient to God's will for your life embodies the woman displayed in Proverbs 31. This is practiced by continuously analyzing ourselves, reading the Bible, keeping His commandments on the tablets of our hearts, and allowing it to transform our lives.

Accountability: If you are struggling with certain sins, such as laziness, selfishness, or whatever it may be have someone help you with accountability. You can ask others around you to help you or give you feedback to ensure you are staying the course.

Now, that you know what a woman of God is as presented in Proverbs 31 it’s time to become that. It’s a continuous process, but is worth the fruit it bears in growing closer to God and bringing others to Christ through your unique character.
